Cardijn Connect - a source of news and information for the Cardijn community. The blog will be published every Thursday during the school term with past editions always accessible from the menu.
Dr Neil McGoran, Executive Director Catholic Education SA today announced the appointment of Kate Bawden to the position of Deputy Principal at Cardijn College commencing Term 1, 2025.
Kate is an experienced leader and is currently the Deputy Principal at St Mary’s College, Adelaide, a position she has held since 2023. Prior to this, Kate was the Head of Campus at Sacred Heart College, Champagnat Campus.
With her leadership experience and deep personal faith, Kate is dedicated to improving learning outcomes for all students, whilst providing a nurturing and faith filled environment for Cardijn College.
Kate is looking forward to collaborating with our dedicated team at Cardijn across the three campuses, as we build a unified learning community and enhance educational environments for the growing southern region of Adelaide.
At Cardijn College, we strive to foster a supportive and inclusive environment, emphasising the importance of community and mutual respect. By prioritising a sense of belonging, we leave no space for bullying.
Ahead of next week's Bullying No Way: National Week of Action, Marian students prepared a video to share how they experience this sense of belonging at Cardijn.
On Monday, Galilee welcomed the wonderful Andrew Chinn for liturgical singing workshops with our primary classes!
Andrew is a well-known singer-songwriter and provides much of our music for masses, prayers, and liturgical celebrations through his Butterfly Music website, an online Religious Education resource.
To finish the day, he led a whole-school concert, inviting many students to perform with him, with the choir supporting in the background.
Our students loved singing and moving to his music, enjoying his amusing stories and humour.
The recent Pathways Expo at Marian was hugely successful and well-attended, it provided an excellent opportunity for students and parents to explore educational and career options, helping students plan their futures with confidence.
For those who were unable to attend or missed out on the booklet, you can access the Pathways Expo booklet HERE. The booklet contains basic information and resources shared during the event.
Reflections from students who attended the expo:
⭐"It was great to see possible career paths and have the opportunity to speak to experts in their fields. I was able to gather information surrounding different apprenticeships, careers that exist with local employers and how these might link with further study. It was a positive experience, and I am glad I went." Year 12 student, Edan
⭐"The Expo was great, specifically having access to the Universities. I was able to get information about different courses and careers. Everyone was really nice and easy to talk to." Year 11 student, Lilly
⭐"I am unsure what I want to do when I finish school, so it was pretty helpful to be able to talk with different experts who could tell me about the job and the skills needed to get there. I now know that numeracy and literacy are really important to become an electrician." Year 10 student, Jude
⭐"The Expo was really informative. It gave me more of an idea of the jobs and the fields I want to go into." Year 9 student, Elvis
⭐"The Expo was really supportive and helped me decide what I want to do when I am older. It also helped me understand what subjects I should be selecting in the future. It was really fun!" Year 9 student, Chelsea
Thank you to all parents, caregivers, students, and staff that attended. We value your feedback and would appreciate it if you could take a moment to complete our feedback survey
This week, Year 10 students from Crew K & L took part in the SAPOL Road Safety Program. This important initiative aims to educate our students about safe practices on the road, providing them with the knowledge they need to stay safe as future drivers.
A big thank you to SAPOL for providing this valuable learning experience.
Galilee's Year 5/6 SAPSASA Soccer team competed in the semi-final on Wednesday, but unfortunately, they didn't advance to the final round.
We are incredibly proud of our students for showcasing exceptional teamwork and growth as a group. Their defensive line, under immense pressure, was outstanding, and every student gave their best effort.
This achievement wouldn't have been possible without the support of our parent helpers, our fantastic coach Ben Dale, and umpire Andrew Freestone. Thank you for your dedication and effort—you made it a memorable experience for the kids!
🧬Week 4 is right around the corner, and that means it’s time to celebrate all things SCIENCE in Australia’s National Science Week!
🥼This year's theme is Species Survival – more than just sustainability, so keep an eye out in the notices for lots of exciting things happening at the Marian campus!
🔬Check out the schedule - there’s something fun and exciting planned every day at school.
On Tuesday, a group of Marian Middle Year students participated in the 'Write a Book in a Day' competition held from 8am - 5pm in the Resource Centre. Run by the Kids’ Cancer Project, the competition serves as both a Service Learning opportunity and a chance for students to practise their literacy skills by writing, illustrating, and publishing a book in a single day.
The book will be made available for free to hospitalised children around Australia. Working with prompts and parameters established by the organisers, students wrote a combined 8000 words with illustrations, culminating in their final products ‘Going Away' and 'Missing Luggage'.
As well as publishing their books, the students also raised over $400 to support the charity that funds vital scientific research to develop better treatments for children with cancer.
This is the first year the College has been involved in this initiative and we congratulate the following students for the enthusiasm, energy, and focus that they brought to a nine-hour writing and illustrating session:
Team A | Team B |
Bella | Felicity |
Emily | Elena |
Holly | Aria |
Annabel | Ziva |
Eryn | Calin |

On Monday 5 August, parents were invited to the Marian Campus to hear from our Principal, Steve Byrne, about the exciting development of a new building which is currently being referred to as ‘Marian West’. This new development will be built between the existing campus and the South Adelaide Football Club with a footbridge linking the two sites. We will continue to keep the community updated as we progress, however there was much excitement in the room as we reviewed the current plans.
Parent feedback was also sought on our current ‘Mobile Digital Devices Procedure’, the use of SEQTA Engage, and potential educational topics to be highlighted for future parent engagement opportunities. Resilience and body image were two which were highlighted as areas of need for our young people.
Thank you to the parents who contributed to this worthwhile discussion.
Last week, our after-school sports students showed their support for Pink Round by donning their best pink accessories!
This special round is all about raising awareness for breast cancer. Breast cancer is the most diagnosed cancer in Australian women with one in seven diagnosed in their lifetime.
We are excited to announce that Year 12 student, Taj has officially signed up as an Auto Mechanic Apprentice with Auto Masters!
Pictured below, Taj is joined by Andy, the proud owner of Auto Masters, and Jenny from MAS, who helped make this opportunity possible.
Congratulations, Taj, on this exciting step in your career journey.
A huge congratulations to Year 7 Marian student Holly, for winning the Rowe Scientific Emerging Talent Award and $500 in prize money at the recent SASTA Oliphant Science Awards!
Holly created an interactive model to demonstrate how colour is perceived differently by humans and dogs. Judges were invited to see the world through a dog's eyes, literally.
Throughout the project, Holly was motivated, self-sufficient, and incredibly focused on her goal. What a fantastic project and tremendous effort. Well done, Holly!
Marian Campus currently has a surplus of high-quality, second-hand uniforms, including many sports jackets, caps and hats, as well as larger size blazers.
Open every Tuesday from 8:30 - 11:00am.
A massive thank you to our Kolbe House middle-school leaders who, this week, cooked a spectacular Sausage Sizzle for the school community to raise $570.00 for Hutt Street Centre, as a part of Kolbe’s fundraising for the upcoming Athon Day at the end of this term.
Mr Clark and Mrs Taylor couldn’t be prouder of their efforts and thank you to everyone who supported this initiative.
Regards,
Isabelle, Mia, Daniella, and Reece.

On Friday, 2 August Mackillop House celebrated their Patron Saint, Mary Mackillop in Saint Luke's Church. We are extremely proud of our student's excellent engagement, participation, and reverence during the Mass. Their behaviour was impeccable and we couldn’t be prouder! In true MacKillop spirit, we celebrated her life with sweet treats and quality time together.
Saint Mary MacKillop of Australia was Australia's first saint. She recognised the inequality among the poor and the lack of education among young people, and felt compelled to take action.
In the MacKillop House, we embrace her famous motto: "Never see a need without doing something about it." We are committed to serving others and addressing the needs of our community.
Mary MacKillop continues to inspire our students and serves as a brilliant role model.
Today we celebrate the Feast Day of St Mary MacKillop. In recognition of this outstanding woman who made a significant contribution to the South Australian community and beyond, the following insights were presented in the National Catholic Education Commission’s (NCEC) newsletter this week. Like many schools across Australia, we pay our respects to St Mary of the Cross MacKillop by way of naming one of our Houses at the Marian Campus after her and, as you can see above, we celebrated a Mass in her honour this week!
For those interested in Mary’s life, which is not without its challenges, it is well worth an investigation of this website: Mary MacKillop Today
Born in 1842 in Fitzroy, Melbourne, Mary was the founding sister and Mother Superior of the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart. An outstanding educator, she was considered in many ways ahead of her time, seeing teaching and learning as a reciprocal process instilling a culture of order and self-discipline through praise and encouragement rather than corporal punishment. Her vision was to provide education for underprivileged children.
Reflection - St Mary MacKillop
God of all blessings, you revealed in Mary MacKillop a sensitivity to the rights and dignity of every person, regardless of race or creed.
May we learn from her to overcome fear and prejudice.
Help us to value the goodness of each person and all the blessings of unity in diversity.
We ask this through the depth and unity of you, our bountiful God who holds all things in being.
Mary, you lived from the heart of kindness,
You served the very poor and needy,
You bestowed dignity on all, pray for us.
