Cardijn Connect - a source of news and information for the Cardijn community. The blog will be published every Thursday during the school term with past editions always accessible from the menu.
During Reconciliation Week at Cardijn, we had the privilege of hosting Uncle Robert Taylor who conducted a meaningful Welcome to Country ceremony.
Cardijn's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Coordinator, Amey Lekkas, organised a comprehensive program across our campuses, engaging staff and students in learning more about our region's rich First Nations culture.
This week provided a valuable opportunity for our school community to deepen our understanding and commitment to Reconciliation.
The Inspired Live event was a significant milestone for our Year 11 Marian Campus students! We had the privilege of hosting 10 Cardijn old scholars on Thursday who returned to their alma mater to share their career journeys, lessons, and experiences, leaving a lasting impact on our students.
We’ve received an outpouring of positive feedback from current students who have expressed their appreciation for the inspiring stories shared.
Thank you to our presenters for generously volunteering time out of your busy schedules to speak to our students.

Last week, Galilee recognised Laudato Si’ Week with several activities at the school. Laudato Si’ is Pope Francis’ letter to the world about caring for our common home, the Earth. It reminds us of our responsibility to take action towards sustainability and the small steps we can all take that can make a big difference to our world for the future.
The activities included creating nature mandalas from natural materials and a Laudato Si’ display with messages about caring for the Earth, a Pentecost fire and prayer service, and the Mini-Vinnies and YCS students cleaned up rubbish around the outside of the school.
“Together, we pledge our commitment to raising awareness about the stewardship of creation.”
- Pope Francis.

Our Marian Year 7/8 Futsal teams participated in the Southern Zone competition on 24 May to qualify for the state finals!
The girls finished second overall and will advance to the state finals later in Term 2, while the boys finished third. Good luck to the girls in their preparation for the next stage!
We are excited to share that 7News will be visiting Marian Campus on Monday 3 June to conduct live-to-air weather crosses during the afternoon and evening bulletins featuring our College Captains, Tillie and Austyn. This special event is to promote The Push Up Challenge, an initiative aimed at raising awareness and funds for mental health through the Push for Better Foundation.
Tillie and Austyn, along with a number of Year 12 students, will be participating in this challenge, showcasing their commitment and spirit as they support this meaningful cause.
We encourage everyone to tune in to 7 News on Monday evening to catch the live segments and cheer on our students as they push for better mental health!
Thank you for your continued support of our students and their initiatives.
Marian's Year 11 Chemistry class conducted their first distillation, producing an aldehyde from alcohol. They then assessed the purity of their sample using the Tollen's test to create a silver mirror. The class achieved three positive samples! Students compared their results with a known aldehyde and glucose, creating more mirrors for further comparison.
Year 9 Galilee students have been busy harvesting mandarins as part of Permaculture Principle 3, 'Obtain a yield,' to dehydrate and store them for later consumption while learning that nothing needs to go to waste.
They used the mandarin peel as part of Principle 5, 'Use and Value Renewable Resources and Services,' to create a natural cleaning product.
The 2024 Pathways Expo has a new look! Building on the success of previous years, this year's event has been designed to also include subject selection advice for students and families.
While still providing access to a host of higher education, employment and training options, access to expert subject guidance has been purposefully included to help students make informed decisions about their future pathways, promoting the connection of their decisions ‘now’ to future possibilities.
Understanding prerequisites, assumed knowledge and how a nationally-accredited VET Certificate can form part of the SACE are all crucial decisions students make when planning their study program, where future planning and vertical thinking are a must!
As always, our Marist Centre Café will be in operation, where you can enjoy a coffee made by the College’s finest baristas and discuss subject choices with our expert staff, all while accessing a range of service providers.
It is with mixed emotions that we say farewell to Sr Margaret Ann, who has served the Galilee community since 2010. Over the past 14 years, Sr Margaret Ann's warm presence has been constant throughout our community, offering support and guidance to students, staff, and families.
Her contributions to our school have been significant, particularly in fostering a nurturing and faith-filled environment. We are grateful for her dedication and hard work and wish her well in her retirement.
Sr Margaret Ann, thank you for your years of service and dedication. You will be missed.
Galilee's Year 6 students recently received their senior rugby tops. This tradition marks a significant milestone, celebrating their leadership and achievements as they prepare to transition to the next phase of their education.
We look forward to seeing them wear their tops with pride and continue to excel in their final year of primary school.
Marcellin Year 11 students recently completed their work experience programs, gaining valuable skills and making positive impressions at their respective placements.
Lily - Southcoast Stainless Steel

Tait - Rowlands Metalworks
Year 11 student Tait finished his work experience at Rowlands Metalworks and is eager to pursue a career in engineering.
Design Prints
Students were tasked to create a design with a theme that could be turned into a repeated pattern, creating harmony and textures on the page. They then combined their works with other students for a collaborative and intricate design.
Monochromatic designs
Our students were challenged to create a monochromatic still life artwork using varying tones of a single colour.
Spray Painting Exploration
Students had the chance to experiment with various spray painting techniques and layering using stencils.
Melissa McLaren's homegroup enjoyed a Magic Harvest lesson focusing on weeds at Galilee. The lesson encouraged students to think differently about weeds, highlighting their beneficial aspects, such as being edible, medicinal, and useful for making weed tea fertilisers for the plants in the garden. Students began identifying and looking for weeds in Galilee's vegetable plots.
Join us for an unforgettable celebration of our students' creativity and talent, marking 40 years of Cardijn College and its dedication to the arts.
Tickets are available both online and in-person at the Hopgood Box Office. Don’t miss out – secure your tickets here: Country Arts SA

Recently a number of Cardijn students and staff took part in Operation Flinders, an 8-day exercise that takes students to Yankaninna Station, where they are guided by Operation Flinders Field Volunteers to trek over 100km. Over the eight days, the students engaged in activities designed to challenge themselves.
Below are a few reflections from our students who recently took part in Operation Flinders:
“We went to the Flinders Rangers for 8 days on an adventurous walk throughout the Yankaninna Station. We met with Indigenous Elders of the Adnyamathanha community and a local environmentalist. The best part of this journey was climbing mountains, looking at views and the stars at night, and hanging out with mates. The challenging part of this trip was the overall amount of walking and the long days. It was always worth it at the end of the day sitting around the campfire laughing with your mates. Overall Operation Flinders was extremely worth it and loads of fun. The skills you get from this journey were 100% worth it.”
- Levi and Tom
“During Operation Flinders we tried new foods like Kangaroo stew and damper. We had the opportunity to sleep under the stars or a hutchie. We would wake up at 5:30am every morning to a horrible alarm clock made by our group leader. We participated in activities such as abseiling and via ferrata. Overall, we walked over 100km which challenged our limits and pushed our boundaries.”
- Anna and Amelia
Catholic School Parents SA is hosting a FREE Cybersafe Families engagement evening on 19 June at 6pm at the St Martin de Porres Catholic Primary School.
This workshop will be meaningful for teachers, parents, and caregivers; the event will offer both online and in-person attendance options.
2024 Mayor’s Reconciliation and Recognition Award
Amey Lekkas (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Coordinator) has been recognised for her outstanding work in the area of Reconciliation in the City of Onkaparinga by Mayor Moira Were AM. Amey has organised a comprehensive program across the Marian and Marcellin sites which have engaged our staff and students in learning more about the First Nations culture of our part of the world. Congratulations and thanks, Amey, for your continued dedication to ensuring that the Cardijn community continues its commitment to Reconciliation – Now more than ever!
A Reconciliation Week Blessing
Something to ponder:
May the Ancient Dreaming
Inform and inspire us
The resilience and generosity
Of the First Peoples encourage us
The clarity and respect of the Prophets motivate us
The endurance and colour
Of the land sustain us
The yearning of all peoples
For unity reconcile us
And may we hear the Living God say
‘I am here among you.’
Amen.
