Cardijn Connect - a source of news and information for the Cardijn community. The blog will be published every Thursday during the school term with past editions always accessible from the menu.
Galilee recently welcomed 17 new students for their transition visits for our Mid-Year Reception intake. The program began in Week 4, alongside a parent information session, spanned five weeks, and concluded with a liturgy for families and students. This initiative provided a lovely opportunity to set our newest and youngest students up for a successful start to school. Our Term 3 Reception teacher, Ms Sophie Way, has been busy preparing the new classroom, contacting kindergarten educators, and meeting the children at their kindergartens prior to their first visit to Galilee.
Facilitated by this smooth transition, these new students have settled into a beautiful routine, their families got to know one another, and the children extended their time to include outdoor learning for the last two visits. We celebrated the end of their transition visits and the beginning of their school journey with a liturgy with their new teacher and their families.
On Monday, we celebrated the recognition of our Year 12 students as enduring members of the Marist family. Each year, the names of the Year 12 students are placed in the Marist heart, continuing the tradition established by St. Marcellin when he founded the Marist Brothers.
St. Marcellin Champagnat had a tradition of remembering the Marist Brothers working in distant places. He kept their memory close to his heart by writing each Brother's name on a piece of paper and placing the names in a bronze heart kept at the Hermitage in France, the home of the Marist Brothers. This act symbolised his care and love for them while he remained at home.
In the spirit of St. Marcellin, the College wishes to remember all graduating Year 12 students and the impact they have made on the community. This tradition symbolises that, although they will soon leave the College, they will forever remain in its heart.

Last Wednesday, coaches from the Aldinga Bay Hockey Club visited Galilee and joined our Year 3-5 students to promote the sport of hockey.
Our students thoroughly enjoyed the sessions and gained confidence in dribbling and push passing with the sticks.
Last Wednesday, Marian's Certificate III Fitness students had the privilege of visiting Goodlife Gym in Noarlunga for their practical assessment.
The students were evaluated on their ability to safely facilitate circuits and group exercise sessions.
It was fantastic to see them in action in a real-world environment. They performed excellently and were suitably exhausted by the end of the day.
Our Level 1 Arch D students (new students to Arch D) from the Marian Campus recently participated in a two-day incursion filled with creativity and collaboration. During these two days, the students were divided into groups and tasked with creating a podcast on a topic of their choice.
On the first day, they brainstormed and selected topics which included pollution and the environment, sibling stories, and school memories. As a team, they then wrote the scripts for their podcasts. The second day was dedicated to recording and finalising their projects.
We are incredibly proud of how the students built upon and utilised their podcasting skills to produce impressive final products. You can now listen to their podcasts on Spotify at School Life Podcasts.
Galilee SAPSASA Soccer Knockout Competition
Last week, selected Year 5 and 6 students represented Galilee in the Soccer Statewide SAPSASA knockout competition. Our team won 2 out of 3 games and successfully advanced to the finals, which will be played next term. The students showcased exceptional determination and sportsmanship throughout the matches.
We extend a heartfelt thank you to Ben Dale for his outstanding and positive coaching. We also express our gratitude to Andrew Freestone for his excellent umpiring and to Amy Dicks for her invaluable assistance in transporting the team.
Ivy Selected for Metro Girls SAPSASA Netball State Carnival
Year 6 Galilee student Ivy was selected to represent the Onkaparinga South District at the Metro Girls SAPSASA Netball State Carnival, held from 19-21 June at the Netball SA Stadium.
Ivy played nine games over three days against strong competition, demonstrating great determination and skill. The experience featured outstanding coaching, the formation of new friendships, and a thoroughly enjoyable time. Congratulations Ivy!
Max takes home the silver medal!
Congratulations to Year 6 student Max who was selected for the Div 1 Southern Metro zone netball team for the SAPSASA Boys' competition. With an impressive seven wins out of nine games, the team was awarded the silver medal! Max played the whole carnival in Goal Attack, scoring many of the team's goals! Well done Max!
Throughout this week, from Monday to Friday, Reception to Year 4 classes participated in swimming lessons at the Noarlunga Swimming Centre.
The swimming program helped students to develop a range of knowledge, skills, understanding and attitudes about:
• Water confidence
• Survival in the water
• Swimming technique
• Rescue of others
• Water safety
• Endurance and fitness
We have loved seeing our students develop their swimming skills in a fun and safe environment!
Marian's Second Hand Uniform Shop is OPEN on Tuesday, 16 July from 9-11am in the School Holidays!

"Last Thursday the Faulkner leadership team travelled to the Adelaide Day Centre for Homeless people where we helped with volunteer work for the afternoon.
When we first arrived, we were welcomed by Joyce who welcomed us to the centre and put us straight to work. During our time there we had the opportunity to sort out our donations, prepare food for the soup van, cut plastic sheets for people to sleep on, create meal hampers, and even fix furniture.
This was a valuable experience for us, and it exposed us to the selfless acts of service which support the disadvantaged in our society. Taking an active role in our house charity is so important for our understanding and appreciation of the work that they do, and how we can help make a meaningful contribution to help support those less fortunate in our community."
- Isabel, Year 12 Captain
On Friday Galilee's Mini-Vinnies social justice group took part in the Vinnies Winter Sleep Out. This was an action to raise awareness and stand in solidarity with people experiencing poverty and homelessness.
Kevin from Vinnies shared some experiences with us which taught us about the importance of helping the vulnerable in our community. We engaged in prayer and reflection, played some games and made felt hearts to share our love with people who access the local Vinnies Pantry services.
Our school community contributed by donating cans and non-perishable food items and creating the Mini-Vinnies symbol out of this food. All of this food will be given to Vinnies to provide families with meals through the local Vinnies Pantry.
Sleeping on the floor of the Galilee Hall and going without some of the luxuries we have at home, provided us all with some understanding of how fortunate we are and how important it is to help out others who aren’t as fortunate.
Well done to all of our Mini-Vinnies for standing in solidarity with those in need!
To wrap up and celebrate all the hard work and achievements of Term 2, all Marcellin students and staff were invited to a special Tradie Bacon and Eggs Breakfast.
Over the past two terms some students from Galilee have been attending Sacramental workshops with their families. Last term they celebrated the Sacrament of Reconciliation and on Tuesday evening they confirmed their baptismal promises by celebrating the Sacrament of Confirmation in a beautiful ceremony with the Vicar General, Fr Dean Marin. On Saturday these students will celebrate their First Communion at the Parish Mass at 5:15pm.
We congratulate the following students for being confirmed in the Catholic Church and for their commitment to their personal faith journey.
Aaliyah, Eli, Elijah, Micah, Oliver and Riley
Georgia and Sofia will also be celebrating the Sacrament of First Communion this Saturday evening.
If you are interested in finding out more about the Sacramental program at Galilee for 2025, please contact Kim Calderbank at kim.calderbank@cardijn.catholic.edu.au.
Year 8 students from Galilee spent an exciting day at Flinders University, where they had the chance to learn Indonesian with Mr Tom Power, a Flinders lecturer.
The highlight of the excursion was exploring the world of Indonesian traditional music by playing the Gamelan. The students learned the basics of this intricate instrument and enjoyed playing various songs together!
REMINDER: 📅 This Friday 28 June is the final day of Term 2 with a normal dismissal time.
Please be reminded that Week 10 of Term 2 (1 - 5 July) is a pupil-free week to allow for Staff Professional Learning.
We look forward to welcoming all students back for Term 3 on Monday 22 July.

Semester 1 Concludes
As the mid-year break for students commences and the Cardijn staff head into their Professional Learning Week, it is timely to look back and to plan for next term – after a time of rejuvenation and reflection.
There have been 20 weeks of schooling! There have been numerous in class and out of class learning opportunities and in the time since January, our students continue their growth towards what we are seeking – their best selves! In order for our young people to flourish in their life’s journey they require supportive and well informed adults around them. The Catholic School Parents SA Conference advertised above is a great opportunity to not only engage with informative presenters but to also meet other parents from other Catholic schools and share your experiences. We encourage those parents who are able to consider this invitation.
It is also important that the College Staff continue their Professional Learning journeys. Typically, ‘Staff Development days’ occur on what are commonly labelled ‘Student-Free days’ at the commencement of each term. In my experience these become ‘one-off’ events and have minimal lasting impact. By combining these days differently we can better utilise a ‘PL Week’ across the College which comprises some intensive work on ‘Explicit Instruction’, Artificial Intelligence in the classroom, curriculum work, multiple workshops which staff are delivering to their peers, breakfast and tours at the Marcellin Campus following on from our visit to Galilee in January. We conclude the week with Marist Formation with the Sacred Heart staff at the Champagnat Campus.
Wishing all families a pleasant mid-year break!
Steve Byrne
Principal
PS. Following on from The Advertiser article this week, I can assure you I am perplexed that Cardijn can be labelled a ‘rich school’!
