Galilee celebrated Shrove Tuesday with a pancake feast prepared by dedicated staff.
Shrove Tuesday marks the day before the beginning of Lent, a period of fasting and reflection observed by many Christians around the world.
Students lined up for freshly cooked fluffy pancakes topped with all their favourite toppings. The event brought the school community together for a day filled with delicious food and joy!
Celebrated worldwide, Shrove Tuesday is an important day in the Christian calendar. It marks the first day of Lent (a 40-day period of fasting and prayer in the lead-up to Easter). Shrove Tuesday is also known as "Pancake Day" because historically it was a day for using up rich foods like eggs, milk, and sugar before the fasting period of Lent began. Pancakes became a popular way to use up these ingredients.
In light of this special day, all students in our school community were able to come and get a free pancake at recess. A huge thank you to our Year 11 and Year 12 student leaders, along with students in our YCS team, who made around 1,500 pancakes for our school community. It was no small task and we are very grateful.
The Ash Wednesday Liturgy held in Marcellin's Auditorium brought the students together in a holy atmosphere of reflection and renewal.
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Lenten season, and the ashes, usually derived from burned palm branches, symbolise repentance, and a call to reflect on one's spiritual journey.
We thank those students who volunteered to assist and undertook speaking roles during in the liturgy.
Congratulations to Amelia, Darcie, and Lexi for being appointed as Galilee’s Middle School Sports Captains for GALMAR! The combined middle school team of Marcellin and Galilee.
With tomorrow's Year 7-12 Sports Day approaching, they've diligently coordinated the team chant and are ready to lead GALMAR with enthusiasm and great spirit.
Their leadership promises to inspire their teammates to give their best effort and to have fun.

On Friday 2 February, a group of student leaders from Years 10, 11, and 12 attended the Student Leaders Gathering at Nunyara in Belair.
The picturesque location provided students with a peaceful escape from academic life, creating an ideal environment to learn about leadership. Throughout the event, a range of speakers including current staff, esteemed alumni, fellow students, and guest speakers shared invaluable insights on leadership through a series of engaging sessions.
The students spent time discovering how to maximize their time at school as emerging leaders and set impactful goals. They were challenged by our Principal, Mr. Byrne, to consider what their legacy will be for the Cardijn community. Families were invited on Saturday morning to hear about the camp and share in morning tea.
The 2024 leadership team is eager, and they carry with them a sense of determination and passion to create a lasting impact on the Cardijn community.
We wish them luck and success with all their goals.
Cardijn is participating in Project Compassion, marking the 60th anniversary of the annual Lenten giving program's launch in Adelaide.
On Shrove Tuesday, the School of the Nativity hosted a remarkable event at the Church of the Nativity – the Caritas, Project Compassion, Travelling Candle Liturgy.
In the prayer service, Archbishop Patrick O'Regan reflected on Adelaide's visionary spirit back in 1964, where individuals had aspirations of making a meaningful impact. He remarked how Project Compassion has since become an integral part of the Lenten season, ingrained in our collective consciousness, and shaping our understanding of charity and its profound effects on our lives.
At the prayer service, “Students wrote and read prayers of intercession and received candles to take back to their school as a sign of Christ’s light that would help them on their Project Compassion journey.”

The Trees for Life club at Galilee is a wonderful initiative that engages young minds in environmental stewardship.
Through hands-on activities and educational sessions, children learn about the importance of trees in our ecosystem and the benefits of planting them. From tree care to maintenance, students actively participate in various projects aimed at enhancing green spaces within our school and community.
The club not only nurtures a sense of responsibility towards nature but also instils a lifelong passion for environmental conservation in our future generation.
Year 7 student Judd has showcased his exceptional skills in motorcycle racing.
Recognised for his skills within the sport, Judd participated in the 'Area99 First National Summer Series' held in South Australia over the weekend.
Judd’s remarkable performance secured pole position during the qualifiers, earning him the number 1 grid position. He lead the competition by clinching victories in all five races.
Well done Judd!
At Marian amongst the lively bustle of students, we spotted a native Australian Tawny Frogmouth! Perched in a tree, this elegant Frogmouth seemed very content in its surroundings.
Ash Wednesday
Our traditional Ash Wednesday liturgies were held across the College this week. I spent the morning at Galilee whilst Patrick Harmer (Deputy Principal) attended the three liturgies at St Luke’s, with the Marian Campus attending in paired year levels. The Marcellin liturgy is covered above.
Each celebration is unique as the age groups differ, and even when the liturgies are repeated, each group brings something special. A personal highlight was the Reception liturgy. These little people are new to things like a Chapel and prayer services. As they sat in a circle on the floor there were prayers, symbols and a reflection, including questions and answers focused on being a better person as a specific focus of Lent – the 40 days leading up to Easter. The Galilee liturgies finished with an uplifting song, with actions, which also reinforced that our actions and beliefs help us to be better people and make the world a better place. This is what Jesus asks of us!
In my experience, it is often the simple things which can have great meaning. The comparison was made that Lent is like planting a seed to be a better person, to do things which make us the best people we can be. As we grow we become stronger and we are better able to help others and possibly ourselves.
Something to ponder as we journey through Lent.
Best wishes,
Steve Byrne
Principal
