Thursday 29 June
6.30 - 7.15PM
Music Centre, Cardijn College Marian Campus
The 2023 Year 12 Drama Production Bloom will be performed in the Cardijn Drama Theatre July 4 - 6 at 7pm. Run time is 1 hour. Tickets are $5 from the Marian Campus front office. Each year, we sell out so get your tickets quick!
All proceeds from Bloom will go towards supporting the St Vincent de Paul Women’s Crisis Centre, an incredible crisis intervention for women often fleeing domestic and family violence.
Bloom follows the story of Flora as she is taken on a surprise Autumn camping trip with her best friends before marrying the man of her dreams. While the trip is fastidiously planned by a former Girl Guide, the ‘scheduled fun’ is thrown askew by a mega mosquito mishap, a narky sister-in-law to be and a revelation that could fracture a friendship. Add in a zany German park ranger and the local handyman heart-throb and entertainment ensues.
🌏 Last week we celebrated Languages Week. Each morning students were welcomed to school with music and morning prayer in various languages. There were a number of lunchtime activities including pasta making and an Australasian Computational and Linguistics Olympiad come-and-try session.
On Wednesday students sold cornetti with Nutella and chocolate and lemon gelato for our Italian day. To finish the week, there were Achenese dancing workshops, an Indonesian quiz run by Indonesian University students and spring rolls, prawn crackers and Durian ice cream for sale.
Students from Marcellin and Marian involved in the college's Army Cadets program had the opportunity to attend a Tri-Service Ball. It was a wonderful chance for them to interact with cadets from other branches including the Navy and Air Force Cadets from all across South Australia.
The students enjoyed the opportunity to swap their camouflage for formal attire to suit the occasion.
Marcellin Cert II students have been working hard on the pergola and seating area ready to be delivered to Galilee Campus. The pergola may look a little on the shorter side at the moment, but will be assembled to its actual height when installed on school grounds by Marcellin students
🏗️ As we count down the days until the completion of the upgraded engineering and automotive workshop at Marcellin Campus, staff and Year 12 students toured the new build. Students were invited to the site’s morning toolbox meeting, joining the tradespeople during their weekly WHS debrief.
Year 9 students have been working through the Become Education program during pastoral care lessons to increase careers awareness, leverage aspirations, and help guide students to develop life-shaping agency. Students from Ms Gabbert's class held their 'Flipped Expo', sharing their findings with the Year 7 students.
It was wonderful to see students and families from Galilee, Marcellin and Marian campuses come together for our annual Careers and Pathways Expo. The feedback from attendees has been overwhelmingly positive.
'Mum and I enjoyed the Expo. It was useful to get a lot of information about next year and possibilities for the future.' - Lily, Year 9
'I found the experience beneficial to my plans for after school, the expo showed me jobs and pathways that fit with my skills and talents. The economics booth told me about job opportunities in the private and public sectors, like working for the Treasury or the Australian Bureau of Statistics. I also dropped into the University of Adelaide’s presentation where I learned all about the five emerging career trends.’ - Beckam, Yr 11
'I took the opportunity to browse the three biggest universities and see what they provide in medicine. I asked some essential questions, like, 'What subjects should I look to study next year?' and 'What avenues will help me get into my career?' They gave some insightful feedback, and this helped to narrow down the pathways that were more aligned to my interests and skill set.' - Natasha, Year 11
Galilee Middle School Students gathered for their inaugural Social Night, an evening full of fun trivia, bingo, games and some delicious pizza. The students were encouraged to form teams with one another and dress up as characters from their childhood. At the end of the evening students were prompted to reflect on what their authentic self looked like and the environment at school that would allow this to happen.
Of course, being a night of competition and team-based challenges, there could only be one winner. ‘The Orangutan Team’ came out victorious with ‘The Daicos Team’ being awarded the best costumes for the evening.
On Tuesday 20 June, a group of students from Galilee and the Mary of Galilee parish celebrated the Sacrament of Confirmation. The students and their parents have been on a faith journey, engaging in the Confirmation Workshops and learning at home together. Father Josy led the celebration, with the support of Father Dominick and it was a beautiful occasion to acknowledge the presence of the Holy Spirit in the lives of these young people.

💡 After securing funding from the State Government's Grassroots Facilities Program last year our oval can now host night games thanks to our newly installed stadium lights. Sharing the space with South Adelaide Football Club, we are thrilled to now have four LED lighting poles to enable night-time training and a scoreboard.

From the Deputy Principal
There have been a number of highlights across our school community throughout the past week, all of which add to the holistic development of our students. A particular initiative that I would like to focus on is the Careers Expo that occurred on the Marian Campus and involved students from all three campuses. It was a marvellous event and there was an infectious buzz in the room as our students and their families engaged with industry professionals and dreamed of what their future may hold.
In support of this, at the recent Middle and Senior School assemblies on the Marian Campus we focused on the topic of careers and pathways. Interestingly, John Dewey states, “The world is moving at a tremendous rate; going where no one knows. We must prepare our children, not for the world of the past, not for our world, but for their world – the world of the future.” This statement was made by Dewey in 1940.. no that’s not a typo! 1940 - 83 years ago! This was shared with both the Middle and Senior School students on the Marian Campus at our recent assembly as the statement is just as pertinent to our young people today. I know when I was going through school I did not have the same opportunities or exposure that our students do today. Our Pathways Coordinator often says that, “You can’t be what you can’t see” in relation to careers and pathways and we know that intrinsic motivation is the most powerful influencer for young people. Therefore, it is important that our young people are exposed to a broad range of careers and pathways. We often find that the topic of careers and pathways taps into this intrinsic motivation and is a great motivator for young people.
So, in sharing the final message from our assembly, I encouraged our students to picture their ideal career and decipher what they needed to do to get there. I encouraged students to be aware that their time starts now! It’s time for self-reflection and it’s time for them to take ownership over their actions and their future.. because it will be here before they know it! And.. in the words of St. Catherine of Siena, “Be who God meant you to be and you will set the world on fire.”
