Last week we farewelled our Marian Campus Class of 2023, who have successfully completed their 13-year educational journey. While some may still have final exams and coursework to complete, they are now ready to embark on the next exciting chapter of their lives.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the parents and caregivers who entrusted us with the education of their sons and daughters and collaborated with us throughout this educational journey.
We are pleased to introduce the students who will be serving in significant Middle Years student leadership roles for 2024.
Middle Years Captains:
Coa Gill & Zoe Gautam
Middle Years Mission Captains:
Ethan Cook, Lila Croser & Agnes Saukuru
We extend our best wishes to them as they begin their meaningful journey of leadership and service within our College community.
These are the outstanding individuals who will lead the way, inspire change and make next year unforgettable. Congratulations to our new leaders!
In Week 3, the annual Academy Cup showcased the outstanding talent and sportsmanship of participating primary schools, including Antonio Catholic School, Cardijn College Galilee Campus, St John the Apostle, Emmaus Catholic School, and All Saints Catholic Primary School.
The competition featured fierce matchups and skilled performances across netball, soccer and Aussie rules, with students from all schools demonstrating their dedication and skill. The event, brought together by the senior Academy sport students, provided all primary students, parents, and supporters, a memorable and inspiring celebration of sport and physical activity.
Congratulations to Galilee Campus who went home overall winners on the day. Galilee's netball team took home the cup, and special recognition goes to Max and Ruby for their sportsmanship awards in football and netball.
Cardijn College continues to be a hub for fostering a spirit of healthy competition and camaraderie among these schools, ensuring that the Academy Cup remains a cherished tradition on the College sporting calendar.
Congratulations to Nic Paparella (Baseball) and Zalika Cederblad (Kayak), whose dedication to their respective sports has earned them a well-deserved spot on the Cardijn College 'Athletes Wall of Fame.'
Nic has recently excelled on the baseball field in the Junior Australian team at the U18 World Cup held in Taiwan, whereas Zalika's prowess in kayaking has been nothing short of extraordinary representing Australia in the Asia Pacific Cup in Japan.
Cardijn College students earn their spot on the Wall of Fame through representing Australia at the junior or senior level, or playing at the highest level in their respective sports, typically reserved for old scholars. As part of our Class of 2023, Nic and Zalika’s efforts are even more inspiring having achieved this level of performance, while also balancing the academic commitments of Year 12!
Both Nic and Zalika serve as exceptional role models, motivating the next generation of athletes at Cardijn College to pursue their dreams with the same dedication and enthusiasm.
Marcellin Campus is proud to share some significant achievements in their ongoing commitment to fostering career development and opportunities for their students. The Campus has seen an impressive surge in apprenticeship sign-ups in recent months, marking a resounding success in their mission to prepare students for the world of work.
One of the key factors contributing to this achievement is Marcellin's robust partnership network. The college collaborates with local businesses, organisations, and industry leaders to provide valuable hands-on experience and apprenticeship opportunities for its students. This invaluable support system ensures that students are exposed to real-world challenges and gain insights into the demands of their chosen trades.
Each week, Cardijn Connect will highlight these student success stories to showcase the diverse and inspiring journeys of our newest school-based apprentices.
It is with great pride that we share that Fletcher and Jack from CogniShield Sportswear have made it through to the Future Anything National Grand Final in Brisbane on 20 November as a Showcasing team!
“We are really excited to go to Brisbane and share our idea with 300 people at the Showcase. At CogniShield Sportswear, our idea was to create concussion detecting sportswear such as headgear, mouthguards and headbands. We are really proud of our progress and look forward to this exciting opportunity!" Fletcher and Jack
At Galilee Campus, the Year 9 students recently embarked on a journey of self-discovery and personal growth during their annual Reflection Day. This special event provided the perfect opportunity for the students to explore their thoughts, values, and aspirations.
The primary aim of the Year 9 Reflection Day was to give the students an opportunity to pause from their regular academic routines and reflect on their own lives, as well as on their relationships with their peers, teachers, and the world around them.
In a fantastic achievement, Year 11 student Teagan has been selected as one of the winners of this year's St Vincent de Paul Christmas Card Design Competition. Her colourful artwork will soon grace the front of fundraising Christmas cards, which will be made available for purchase in the near future, supporting Vinnie's. Each student harnessed their creative skills in working on their beautiful entries.
This week, 12 Marian Campus students travelled to Middleton Beach to compete in a Tag Team surfing event. Each team consisted of six surfers who had around six minutes each (40 minutes total) for everyone in the team to paddle out, surf a wave, then tag the next teammate. Our students represented Cardijn magnificently, and we are extremely proud of their efforts in some tough conditions.
A special mention to our boys’ team (Cardijn 1) who won both their heat and their semi-final convincingly. Their skilful surfing has qualified them as the top seed for the final being held later this term. Our girls' team (Cardijn 2) were pretty unlucky to miss out on the semi, and we are excited to see this young group succeed in the future!
Cardijn 1: Ashton, Arley, Jaxon, Hayden, Thomas & Khai
Cardijn 2: Jemma, Isla, Allegra, Indie, Jessica & Chloe
The Year 8 Aldinga Eco Adventurers from Galilee have had their first local excursion to the Aldinga Reef. Jeremy Gramp, our School Officer from Green Adelaide, joined us for the afternoon and helped us identify a number of intriguing finds while the students were beachcombing along the shoreline. These included crabs, tapeweed fruits, Neptune’s necklace, corkweed, squid eggs and the best find of the day … a Port Jackson shark!
In week 3, our Year 10 Outdoor Education students visited Second Valley for a fishing trip where the emphasis was on learning about responsible angling and fostering an appreciation for the environment. They were encouraged to practice catch-and-release, ensuring the preservation of fish populations and the delicate balance of aquatic ecosystems.
Additionally, students learned about the detrimental effects of pollution, overfishing and climate change on these environments, highlighting the importance of their role in conservation efforts. Through interactive discussions and immersive experiences in natural settings, they developed a stronger connection with the environment, realising the significance of protecting it for future generations.
The Marian Campus End of Year Art and Music night is being held in Week 5 on Thursday16 November.
As we conclude the year with the final performances of our music ensembles in Tangka, it's the perfect opportunity to enjoy the refreshing summer night air. Join us to celebrate a year of dedication and hard work from Cardijn Bands and Choirs, surrounded by family and friends.
For those seeking an inspiring indoor experience, step inside the lower level of the Chavoin building. Here, you can admire the exceptional works of this year's Year 12 Art, Design and Fashion students, as well as selected pieces from students in Years 7 to 11.
There will be an official opening of the Art Exhibition at 6:15pm, with music beginning at 6:30pm!
The Spring Fling is a fun, social event for Year 7, 8 & 9 Marian and Galilee Campus students.
From the Principal
Life is busy – or is it just rich and full?
Last Friday formal classes concluded for the Class of 2023 and they departed in a dignified and respectful manner which leaves us with fond memories of them. Notably, as the Class of 2023 departs, the College Leaders of the Class of 2024 have been announced this week and we congratulate these fine young people. You see, before one year ends another begins! The 2024 College Leaders will continue the outstanding ‘servant leadership’ of previous Cardijn College Leaders which was so evident this year and especially this term.
We have also announced the Marian Middle School Leaders this week. A new tradition has commenced in the context of the pastoral structure of the Campus and the increased enrolment. Leadership is a privilege and a wonderful learning experience for our students and it is an integral aspect of the culture at Cardijn. I would also like to thank the key senior staff who dedicate themselves to developing and nurturing our student leaders.
To conclude, a special mention to the Galilee students who this week competed and won the Cardijn Academy Cup! I might be a little biased but I reckon the Galilee ‘spirit’ is very special and this was very evident on the day!
Best wishes,
Steve Byrne
Principal
