In light of NAIDOC Week, we are thrilled to share our vibrant new mural created by the talented Scott and Ashalea from Rusted Tin - Contemporary Aboriginal Arts.
Students wanted a brightly coloured mural to brighten up the space and highlight our diverse community. Students worked with Scott and Ashalea to first describe our community and draw some symbols that represented those words. Scott and Ashalea then took those images and created this amazing piece of art. The artwork that now brightens up the student plaza, represents how as a school community we should let kindness guide our actions and respect shape our interactions.
Marcellin students and staff participated in a weaving activity as part of our NAIDOC celebrations, centred around honouring and celebrating our rich Indigenous culture.
We had the privilege of engaging with local First Nations women Aunty Di, Aunty Kath, and Aunty Janice who graciously shared their knowledge and expertise, guiding us in crafting our unique weaved creations.
This experience deepened students appreciation for Indigenous traditions and served as an opportunity to enhance their textile skills, a valuable asset when pursuing hands-on careers.
A group of students participated in Operation Flinders an 8-day outback adventure program held in the northern Flinders Ranges. Among the physical efforts of abseiling and hiking nearly 100km, students had the opportunity to experience Indigenous culture and bushcraft - building self-confidence while challenging themselves along the way.
'A moment I remember from Operation Flinders is completing the absail challenge. I have grown in self-confidence and learnt about myself. I am grateful for the opportunity' - Jai, Year 9
During their Health lesson, Galilee Year 6 students have been learning about the topic of identity. As part of their learning, students created a display of themselves to share with an audience. Students shared themes including their family trees, their pets, sports they enjoy and influential people in their lives. Many displays were interactive so the audience could participate in hands-on activities.
Parents, students, and staff were invited to attend this wonderful event to share in their learning. Students enjoyed sharing and talking to the many visitors who attended on the day.
What a fantastic Athon Day, the atmosphere was electric as senior students and staff treated us to several incredible performances in the Student Plaza. This year we collectively raised over $9,500 along with an abundance of essential items and non-perishable goods for local community members in need. We hope you enjoy this recap as much as we enjoyed our 2023 Athon Day.
👟 Our Open A Netball squad recently flew to Perth to take part in the Annual Marist School Netball Championship. The team demonstrated unwavering determination and showcased their impressive skills over the three-day tournament. The girls fought fiercely right until the end securing a commendable 7th-place finish overall.
🏅 Special mention to Bella (Year 10) and Hayleigh’s (Year 11) outstanding performances that earned them well-deserved spots in the Highly Recommended Team. Year 12 student Chelsea’s overall outstanding performance saw her receive the Most Wanted Player of the entire tournament.
The Year 12 Production of Bloom was a huge success! With packed audiences on each of our nights, the students performed wonderfully and should be proud of themselves! All ticket sales and donations from Bloom will go towards supporting the St Vincent de Paul Women’s Crisis Centre. We are so grateful to everyone who came to see our show and support this talented group of Year 12 students and the arts at Cardijn College!
Year 10 Marian students have been engaging in the world of work. Whether through a formal work experience placement, or a program to enhance job readiness and transferable employability skills, our students have engaged positively with this immersive learning opportunity.
Some experiences have included medical research, journalism, mechanics, speech therapy, physiotherapy, pharmacy, hairdressing, childcare, aged care, aviation, floristry, engineering, graphic design, landscaping, recycling, plumbing and fitness.
A group of middle school students from Marian Campus embarked on an exciting journey to the Catholic Education Office to take part in Arch D's Podcasting Leaders Day. This event brought together young podcasters from 32 Catholic schools, providing students with the opportunity to collaborate on writing unique stories, that were then recorded as captivating podcasts.
Throughout the day, students were able to learn from esteemed industry professionals such as Ali Clarke from Mix 102.3 and Tom Basso, a producer from Triple M. Students actively participated in various activities and formed connections with other enthusiastic podcasters from Catholic schools in SA, making the experience both meaningful and enjoyable for all involved.
On Friday night, the Galilee Mini-Vinnies Social Justice group, held a Vinnies Winter Sleepout at school to raise awareness and stand in solidarity for people experiencing homelessness.
The students went without some of the comforts and luxuries we enjoy most days, including a warm bed, safe house and delicious food.
Students slept on the floor of the school hall and ate simple soup for dinner. Students engaged in empathy-building activities and had a visit from a local Vinnies representative - Kevin Liston. The group learnt about social justice from Marian Campus YCS students Aden and Charron and made care packages for local community groups in need.
Some reflections from the students:
'I enjoyed the soup and making care packages and I learnt to be grateful for what I have.' - Marley, Year 6
'I learnt how others might feel and in the future I would like to help people in need.' - Indigo, Year 4
'My goal for the future is for all homeless people to have a home.' - Pearl, Year 5
Within minutes of being installed, Galilee students secured their spots on the brand-new picnic benches created and donated by our skilled students at Marcellin Campus.
In the AFLW battleground at West Beach, our junior girl footballers have fiercely battled throughout the term. With unwavering tenacity, they've endured relentless trainings and gruelling matches - rain, hail or shine. These indomitable footballers have emerged from the season undefeated. Great job girls!
Marian Stage Two Food and Hospitality classes recently held a Chef's Table event where students created their teacher’s favourite meal. However, there was a catch... the teacher's favourite dish was prepared using plant-based foods only. A challenging task especially when steak and chips were someones favourite.
Students had to utilise a range of contemporary ingredients and produce alternative proteins to imitate meat. Students had to demonstrate contemporary food design and hospitality presentation skills. The luncheons were a great success, completed exceptionally well by our budding chefs.
'For most of us, it’s a sad truth: No one has systematically trained us on how to speak effectively under pressure.'
Verbal Self-defence Confidence Coach and founder of Social Kung Fu Matt Purcell, spoke with students about skills to become more resilient, self-aware and create positive change in their school’s culture.
The seminar included mental health education, exercises that build critical thinking and confidence preparing students to be ready for anything life throws at them.
From the Principal
As Term 2 draws to a wintry close we give thanks for the broad educational opportunities afforded our students by our generous and capable staff – and thanks also to the students and families who fully engage across the College.
Each Cardijn Connect captures a snapshot of events and learning activities, performances and achievements from members of the Cardijn Community. Suggestions from the community are also welcome!
As an inclusive community we respectfully acknowledge NAIDOC Week by way of our Indigenous mural. Such murals appear across numerous parts of our nation – but especially in our schools as we aim to educate our young people in the truthful history of our great nation. Over the years ahead, there is scope to expand on this story in relation to each campus to ensure Cardijn students are well informed on such important matters.
In closing the term I want to share an extraordinary example of ‘A Cardijn Education’ – The Year 12 Drama Production – Bloom. There’s a simple approach to senior drama which goes along the lines of choosing a published play which is suitable to the class. This makes sense and is quite acceptable. And then there is the extraordinary approach for the teacher, Mr Brady Lloyd, to write and direct a purposefully student focused, relevant and pertinent play which provides the opportunity for each member of the senior class to, well – Bloom! It was a brilliant production and performance and warmly applauded by audiences each night. The support of families, classmates, former drama students and many staff is testament to the calibre of the Cardijn education at work here! Well done to Mr Lloyd and the Year 12 Drama Class who really appreciate the opportunity to perform for the community which provides such great support.
Best wishes for the mid-year break!
