Our Year 5 and 9 students had a fantastic afternoon sharing their BECOME.Me presentations.
The Showcase was a buzz of excitement as families and students explored the amazing world of work. Here are some reflections:
Harriet (Year 5) I love that you could choose any subject that you were interested in and I chose an Interior Designer. Did you know…
- that there are more than 2000 interior Designers in South Australia
- there are lots of different kinds of Designers (Inside and Outside)
- this occupation can lead to other occupations like florists or cabinetry designing
- you need to work with plumbers, window cleaners and everyone else that puts things together to finish a project.
I loved learning about Interior Designing 😊
Marley C (Year 5) "I researched all about an Athletics Coach. I learned that you can coach so many types of athletics like, shot put, discus, high jump, long jump, sprinting, hurdles, etc. I loved creating an athletics stadium and made a long jump pit with people racing and had my information around the stadium. I really loved our BECOME lessons." 😊
Lucy (Year 9) "Researching about becoming a CSI (Crime Scene Investigator) interested me and having this time I got to find out more about this job. I love all the parts of the job and the journey that you have to take to get there, and it has made me even more excited to achieve my goal of becoming a CSI."
Macy (Year 9) "Doing the Become project allowed me to research my dream job, giving me so much insight into what it would be like to become a psychologist. This project was fun because I was given the opportunity to research something that I am passionate about. Finishing the Become project made me excited about my future and gave me something to strive for."
Carnival Day is the culmination of an integrated RE, Maths and STEAM task. Students have been learning about Catholic social teachings and selected a Catholic Charity to raise funds through their ‘Carnival Side Show’. The school was a buzz of laughter and joy and there were many treasures won!
Through the collection of data, students calculated the probability of their Carnival stall and applied the conversion of fractions to decimals to percentages.
Students had to design, create and trial their Carnival Side Show ensuring that success was possible. A special mention to our wonderful Year 6 students who demonstrated outstanding leadership to the younger students and allowed some ‘special’ prizes to be won.
At the conclusion of Carnival Day, students then had to calculate the profit and loss statement for their Carnival enterprise.
The total money raised was an outstanding $2217.85! The charities that will be supported are Hutt Street Centre, Aboriginal Catholic Ministry, CentaCare and the St Vincent De Paul Society.
Social justice is alive and thriving at Galilee!
On Monday 25 September, we held our inaugural Future Anything Cardijn Showcase, where more than 90 innovative, scalable and sustainable solutions were presented by our Year 10s. There was a steady stream of students, teachers and families who came to see the trade display, and were blown away by some of the amazing ideas our students came up with! A huge congratulations to the following award winners on the day:
Principal’s Award: Lock & Brush (Ellah, Aryliah, Mia)
Environmental Award: Aerostride (Liam & Jacob)
Social Enterprise Award: Open-Minded (Lachie, Brendan, Armani)
People’s Choice Award: (4-way tie) CogniShield Sportswear (Fletcher & Jack), Spectrum Stationery (Ava & Melodie), Stylish Sensations (Sienna), Jumpline (Damian, Memphys & Sebastian)
Excitingly, three of our teams have also been selected by a panel of external judges to represent Cardijn in the National Semi-Finals next term, for their chance to compete in the Grand Final for a prize of $25,000!
Congratulations to Jumpline (Damian, Memphys & Sebastian), CogniShield Sportswear (Fletcher & Jack) and Plant Your Mind (Alyssa & Brooke) for being selected and we wish them all the very best!
Year 9 students embarked on an adventurous journey to remember as they attended their camps last week. From conquering challenging outdoor activities to fostering new friendships, camp provided the perfect opportunity for these young adventurers to step out of their comfort zones and embrace the great outdoors.
Year 10 and 11 students recently came together to celebrate their highly-anticipated semi-formal event, marking a memorable milestone in their Cardijn journey.
Some of our students and staff had the honour of participating in the annual Onkaparinga Prayer Breakfast, a cherished local event since 2010. This gathering brought together diverse members of the Onkaparinga region, including school, business, Church, and government leaders, to celebrate our local community, foster connections, share faith, and enjoy a communal meal.
During the event, we had the privilege of hearing from guest speaker Brett Ryan of Focus on the Family and learning about this year's charity, Vinnies, and their Christmas appeal.
We were also privileged to witness the first Onkaparinga Prayer Breakfast Community Recognition Award. This award is presented to an individual who personifies the heart and soul of our community. This year the award was generously sponsored by the Dornford Building Group - a local company founded and owned by Marcellin old scholar, Jake Dornford. This inaugural award was presented to Sisilina Saukuru, also an old scholar and former College Captain, for her unwavering and multifaceted dedication to our school, parish, and diocesan communities.
It was a wonderful event – we are really looking forward to attending again next year!
Congratulations to our students who showcased their business pitches before a discerning panel of judges as part of the City of Onkaparinga's Incub8 Youth Start-Up Program.
Incub8 is an all-encompassing six-week incubator program tailored to the youth, designed to foster the aspirations of budding entrepreneurs in creating a business blueprint and a Minimum Viable Product (MVP). Through this program, students gain valuable entrepreneurial skills spanning the creation and capture of value, value delivery, prototyping and testing of their offerings, and a deep understanding of value proposition, revenue model, and sales channels.
The esteemed judging panel included the Mayor of the City of Onkaparinga, Moira Were, Founder and Proprietor of the award-winning Cheffy Chelby's, Michelle Lowe, and Cardijn College Principal, Steve Byrne. We extend our sincere gratitude to our judges for their time and for the inspiring words of encouragement to our future business leaders.
Volunteer coaches from Port Noarlunga Bowling Club (PNBC) assisted our Year 10 PE students to learn the basics of Lawn Bowls as part of a 10-session Winter Bowls program. The program and the students involved were recently featured in the Bowls SA enewsletter The Bowler.

From the Deputy Principal
As we reach the conclusion of Term 3, we take the opportunity to reflect on what a great year it has been so far. We have truly moved into the 'post-Covid' era from a school perspective and it has been wonderful to see students engaging in so many rich learning activities. These include camps, excursions, retreats and the significant student and parent events that have taken place, without restrictions! These activities and events are crucial in the holistic education of a student at Cardijn. In saying this, I would like to acknowledge the work of our staff who make these events possible and the support of our families who, by working in partnership with us, make these a success.
As we enter the holiday break and the conclusion of Term 3, it is also an important time to rest and rejuvenate before a rich and full Term 4! These well-deserved moments of rest will equip us for the adventures, challenges and celebrations that await in the final term of 2023.
