Cardijn Connect - a source of news and information for the Cardijn community. The blog will be published every Thursday during the school term with past editions always accessible from the menu.
This week we are celebrating the excellent teaching and learning that happens in Catholic schools every day. Running from May 13-19, Catholic Education Week recognises the many amazing reasons that students, staff and families love Catholic schools and what makes these communities so special.
Galilee students shared what they value most about their Catholic school and expressed these thoughts in their favourite places, while Marian College Captains Austyn and Tillie gave us their perspectives on why they think our college is so special.
💛 "I love Cardijn because it is a place I feel safe to learn and express myself. To me, Cardijn is a place where I belong." - Austyn, College Captain
❤️ "I love Cardijn for its sense of community and the endless opportunities we are provided with."
- Tillie, College Captain
Galilee's free Mother's Day coffee last Friday morning was a success! We hope you enjoyed the little treat from us and know that you are appreciated every day. 💐☕
Our Year 8 Marian students had an exciting week of camping at Dzintari Latvian Campsite (Yankalilla) and Cooinda Retreats (Victor Harbor) last week.
Students participated in various fun activities, including canoeing, surfing, biking, challenges, races, and more. We were fortunate to have beautiful sunny weather in the low 20s all week.
Last week, the School Sport SA MR Surfing Team Trials were held at Middleton. Our students competed for a chance to represent the state in the U19 and U16 MR Teams events at the Australian Surfing Championship in New South Wales later this year.
Our Under 16 Girls, Isla and Allegra, performed exceptionally well and secured the first position, ensuring their spot in the nationals!

We are so proud of our students for showcasing their skills and determination. Well done, you did a fantastic job.
The Year 12 Marian Food and Hospitality students recently completed their Stage II food assignment! As part of the assignment, they had a week to individually select and modify a dessert recipe suitable for a function centre.
The students were required to adapt the recipe to include at least three recognisable elements and/or decorating techniques to demonstrate their skills in a contemporary presentation. They considered various aspects such as texture, colour, height, portion control, placement, and flavour combinations to showcase their understanding of current or emerging technological advances in the Food and Hospitality Industry.
The students did an exceptional job, and the results were impressive. Each dessert demonstrated the students' learned knowledge, understanding, and individual flair!
We congratulate Year 11 Marcellin student Ethan on his apprenticeship journey at Nairn Services Pty Ltd! Ethan is working towards completing a Certificate III in Carpentry. We wish Ethan all the very best with his apprenticeship and future career.

A group of Galilee students participated in the Onkaparinga South Cross Country event last Thursday at Noarlunga Downs Primary.
Our students exhibited great effort and perseverance while running a challenging course. Congratulations to Flynn, Hugh, and Olivia for qualifying for the state championships in their age category.
On May 15, a group of students in Years 9-12 attended the Inspiring Australians Student Summit at Christies Beach High School to hear from the following guest presenters:
- Craig Foster AM, 2023 NSW Australian of the Year
- Tiahni Adamson, 2024 SA Australian of the Year
- Mark Le Messurier, 2022 SA Senior Australian of the Year
- Dr. Trudy Lin, 2022 SA Young Australian of the Year
The excursion was an incredible experience for our students, who took important messages home about perseverance, gratitude, and selflessness. Please see below some student reflections on their favourite presenter.
"Craig Foster is a former Socceroo and the 2023 NSW Australian of the year. He is a Human Rights activist who has travelled the world helping those who are less fortunate and in need of dire help. From his speech we learnt the significance of trusting ourselves, taking risks and doing what we aspire to accomplish."
- Izaak
"Tiahni was an amazingly inspiring person, connecting deeply with her roots as a Torres Strait Islander person, bringing her connection to country into her career, and helping us to better understand how we can all care for land and country. Tiahni was especially inspiring as a year 12 student, about to enter university, with a strong sense of what I want to do. She shared, "life is not a sprint, it's a marathon" and to be true to our passions and values above all else."
- Azi
"Mark particularly stood out to me with his inspirational words about how to be yourself. I learned a valuable lesson from him, and that lesson is to truly do what you love and what you want to pursue. I really appreciate what Mark said to us and it has helped me be more comfortable with my life path."
- Emma
"Dr Trudy Lin, the 2022 SA Young Australian of the Year winner, shared her inspiration for special needs dentistry and her passion for helping people who may not have access to dental care. Listening to her speech we learnt the importance of finding and knowing your 'why', your reason and drive that you can constantly use to remind yourself to keep going when things get tough."
- Hope
We congratulate Year 8 Marian student Aehron, who recently participated in the SA Interschool Chess Tournament. Aehron won six games and tied the seventh, earning him the gold medal.

We would like to express our gratitude to the Careers and Employment Expo for creating such an outstanding opportunity for our students to learn about potential future pathways.

Catholic Education Week
Across South Australia, this week is dedicated to ‘Catholic Education’. A quick glance at Catholic Education SA’s socials will give you a sense of the joy and celebrations that are underway. You’ll also notice our College Captains feature in them!
There has also been a range of activities at Galilee for the students to express themselves via a ‘heart’ theme, and these will feature on our social media as well.
So, why have our families chosen a Catholic Education at Cardijn? There are a myriad of reasons, and just this week, we have conducted tours at Marcellin, Galilee and Marian, and this is a question we ask and is asked of us. I think ‘quality education with a faith base and multiple pathways for all the students being nurtured by a professional and caring staff’ are repeated themes during such conversations. However, this can’t unfold if we are not working in partnership for the benefit of our young people. By ‘we’ I am referring the College Staff and our families.
The underpinning statement of the recently released Strategic Plan – ‘Towards 2027… Our Cardijn Way’ puts it like this:
Our Cardijn Way fosters a culture of belonging and aspiration. We work in partnership to encourage, enable, and support students, families, and staff to live faithfully and with integrity.
Thank you for choosing a Catholic Education at Cardijn!

Cardijn College is an R-12 co-educational Catholic school in the Marist tradition, deeply inspired by the method of College patron Joseph Cardijn with a foundation built on the three pillars of his teachings; to See, Judge and Act.
