Cardijn Connect - a source of news and information for the Cardijn community. The blog will be published every Thursday during the school term with past editions always accessible from the menu.
Last week during Thrive, the founder of Social Kung Fu, Matt Purcell presented to our Year 8 Marian students.
Social Kung Fu is a unique verbal training that equips people with techniques to handle pressure, improve self-esteem, and enhance communication skills to disarm bullying and verbal conflict effectively.
This session gave our students valuable tools to navigate challenging social situations and build confidence in interpersonal interactions.
On Wednesday afternoon, Marcellin held another successful and engaging Chick Chat event. We surprised our students with sushi and got them involved in creating Kintsugi bowls!
Student Support Services Manager Mr Ascoli and Principal Mr Byrne were guest speakers and spoke to our students about encouragement, self-confidence, and support mechanisms available to them. Mr Byrne shared a strong message about the responsibility that the school has to provide a happy, healthy, and safe space for all of our students.
Milo, our beautiful support dog, brought smiles and comfort to the Year 9 homeroom at Galilee last week.
Several staff members from across the College joined our friends at Sacred Heart to participate in the Marist Methodology course. They spent the day learning about Marist Spirituality and the vital work Marist educators do in schools.
We are thrilled to announce that Cardijn’s Mimi Thorpe has been nominated in The Advertiser's 'Australia's Best Teachers' campaign and featured in their newspaper!
Mimi's teaching journey began a decade ago in Indonesia. After moving to Australia on a scholarship, she joined Cardijn College as an Indonesian teacher, earning acclaim for her ability to bridge cultures and inspire students.
Ms Thorpe has also been instrumental in establishing cross-cultural exchanges with schools in Java, Indonesia, and played a key role in a 2022 memorandum of understanding between the Indonesian Embassy and Catholic Education South Australia. This agreement has made Cardijn College a hub for Indonesian language programs.
We are immensely proud of Mimi Thorpe's achievements and her dedication to our school community.
The annual Dinner Dance for our Year 12 students was a spectacular event! This cherished Cardijn tradition was brought to life as our students dazzled the audience with cleverly choreographed House group performances, showcasing their talents and creativity.
We are excited to announce the upcoming Cardijn College Pathways Expo open to students from all campuses in Years 9-12 and kindly ask you to mark your calendar!
This event will provide invaluable insights into pathway opportunities including study, work and training. Key staff will also be on hand to provide subject choice guidance ahead of making selections for next year!
Save the Date: Wednesday 31 July
Time: 2.45 – 5.30pm
Location: Marian Campus Gym
We look forward to seeing you there and exploring potential pathways together.
Year 11 Psychology students delved into brain anatomy with an exciting (sheep's) brain dissection. They absolutely loved the hands-on experience! Warning: The following images contain sensitive content, including blood and gore. Viewer discretion is advised, although content has been blurred.
Over the weekend, the Galilee community celebrated a Family Mass for the Feast of Pentecost. Seeing so many families and students participating in the mass was heart-warming.
The Mini-Vinnies students held a cake stall to raise money for pantry supplies for the St Vincent de Paul Society, raising an impressive total of $234.00! Thank you to the families who baked and the students and families who helped on the stall.
It was a grand celebration of the parish and school working together!
On Wednesday we celebrated the Feast of Pentecost on the Outdoor Lounge with our Pentecost fire. Each class visited and engaged in a short liturgy, thinking about the presence of the Holy Spirit in the lives of these disciples, who were filled with this fire and inspired to share the ‘Good News’ with others.
We know Pentecost as the birthday of the church. We thought about how the Holy Spirit is present in our own lives and how we share the gifts of the Spirit with others. The students reflected on showing kindness, being in harmony, having compassion and helping others.
This week, Galilee's Reception students participated in National Simultaneous Storytime in the Library.
National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country.
Now in its 24th successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children's book that explores age-appropriate themes, and addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum for Foundation to Year 6.
On Monday, students in the Certificate III in Fitness program were evaluated on their skills in maintaining gym equipment and the gym environment, as well as on their ability to organise the gym space into a functional area. They also led some Year 8 students through a small circuit and then conducted a group exercise session. It was a fun and engaging day for our students!
Join us for an unforgettable celebration of our students' creativity and talent, marking 40 years of Cardijn College and its dedication to the arts.
Tickets are available both online and in-person at the Hopgood Box Office. Don’t miss out – secure your tickets here: Country Arts SA
As we celebrate a significant milestone—40 years of Cardijn College—we are excited to share a special memento with the youngest members of our school community.
This year, as part of our anniversary celebrations, every student will receive either a commemorative 40th-anniversary pin or bag charm. This gift is a symbol of the family spirit that makes Cardijn so special.
The pins and charms are a way for our students to carry a piece of our school's history with them every day. We hope it serves as a reminder of their connection to the larger Cardijn family and inspires pride in our shared achievements and values.
We invite you to encourage them to wear or display it proudly, as a celebration of our past and a look forward to the future.
Thank you for being a part of our community and for supporting us in making Cardijn College a wonderful place to learn and grow.
One of Marcellin's Industry Engagement and Employment Field Officers, Michaela Marcus, is an ambassador for Catherine House, an organisation that provides accommodation and support services for women experiencing homelessness in South Australia.
We are proud to announce that Marcellin is also lending their support to Catherine House. The campus has introduced six recycling bins for students and staff to recycle cans and bottles, with all proceeds collected being donated to Catherine House. This initiative not only provides a practical recycling solution but also allows us to give back to our community.
At Marcellin, we believe in the power of education and community support to create positive change. Together with Catherine House, we are committed to making a difference in the lives of those in need.
Galilee students had a fantastic day at the Environment Forum excursion with Jeremy from Green Adelaide. From nature journaling to working on a project idea for Galilee, and playing traditional Kaurna games with 'Walking with Kaurna' - it was an enriching experience for everyone involved!
Marcellin Year 10 students recently completed their work experience programs, gaining valuable skills and making positive impressions at their respective placements. Scarlett, Maddison, and Savannah each had unique opportunities to explore different industries and excel in their roles.
Scarlett had an incredible week at Sasha's Cafe during her work experience. She excelled in making coffee, point of sale, customer service, and cleaning. Her performance was so impressive that she has been offered a casual job.
Maddison completed her work experience at D+C Fuel Injection Services and did an excellent job. She thoroughly enjoyed her week there.
Savannah had a fantastic time learning the ropes at Anakay Hair Design and thoroughly enjoyed learning new skills.
On Friday, 17 May, Kelsey Murdoch, our Construction Trade Trainer, Tanya Sanchez, our Industry Engagement & Employment Field Officer, and our student Olivia attended the Master Builders SA Annual HiViz Women Building SA Luncheon at the Adelaide Convention Centre.
This event celebrates the success and achievements of the many wonderful women in South Australia’s building and construction industry. In addition to a wonderful lunch, the event hosted many interesting guest speakers.
Max represented Onkaparinga South at the local school netball and the team finished in 3rd place with three wins and one loss. As a result, Max has been selected to represent the Southern District in the first boys' carnival in June! Congratulations Max!

A topic we are frequently speaking to students about is Pathways and Careers.
Whether this pathway is across campuses or onto the next stage of a young person's life, aspiring to a pathway is incredibly important. What do we mean when we use the language 'aspire'? To aspire is to have a hope or ambition of achieving something.. and in this instance, it's the hope or ambition of an exciting future. In Our Cardijn Way, we foster a culture of aspiration.
This is evidenced by the 95% of 2023 graduates on the Marcellin Campus who graduated with an apprenticeship, which is staggering given the national average is closer to 5%. It is evidenced by the 48% of 2023 graduates on the Marian Campus who graduated 'dual certified', achieving the SACE (South Australian Certificate of Education) as well as a VET (Vocational Education & Training) Certification. This is evidenced by the 100% SACE completion from all graduates across both the Marian and Marcellin Campuses in 2023.
Today on the Marian Campus, we welcomed back ten old scholars who spoke to Year 11 students about their experiences and pathways since graduating from Cardijn. These students represented graduating classes from 2000 all the way through to 2016. They spoke of their experiences in Psychology, Real Estate, Electrotechnology, Journalism, Hair Artistry, Teaching and Business, to name a few!
Conversations about pathways are not just important - they are crucial! They can ignite a sense of purpose and meaning in our students, providing them with a clear vision for their future. We strongly encourage you, as parents, to initiate and engage in these conversations at home. Your involvement can make a significant difference in shaping your child's future.
We aspire to develop graduates who are not just 'finishing' school but are graduating from school and graduating with a pathway... in Our Cardijn Way!

Cardijn College
Cardijn College is an R-12 co-educational Catholic school in the Marist tradition, deeply inspired by the method of College patron Joseph Cardijn with a foundation built on the three pillars of his teachings; to See, Judge and Act.
