Cardijn Connect - a source of news and information for the Cardijn community. The blog will be published every Thursday during the school term with past editions always accessible from the menu.
Both students and staff from Marian and Marcellin gathered on Wednesday to pay tribute to the ANZACS and all Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel. Both events were hosted by the Cardijn College Army Cadet Unit, one at each campus. The presence of a special guest graced the Marian service: David McCarthy, a retired Royal Marine Commando, who delivered a solemn and respectful ode.
ANZAC Day
Cardijn students proudly represented the College at ANZAC Day services last week.
Marian students represented Marian at the Port Noarlunga/Christies Beach RSL service, Hallett Cove service and at the ANZAC Youth Vigil held at the Morphett Vale Eternal Flame Memorial Gardens.
The 430 ACU Cardijn College Cadets participated in the overnight vigil at Morphett Vale from 6pm to 6am on ANZAC Day, standing watch in shifts alongside local Scouts, St John's Cadets, Surf Life Saving members and Youth Guides, involving a number of other Cardijn student representatives.
Galilee student leaders and members of the Mini Vinnies group proudly represented Galilee at the ANZAC Day Service in Aldinga. They took part in the solemn occasion by laying a wreath to pay their respects.
As a community, we remember those who have served, and those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.
Lest we forget.
Marcellin Campus recently hosted a stakeholder BBQ, welcoming industry leaders from the automotive and engineering sectors. This event provided an excellent opportunity for us to engage with our industry partners and showcase our new facilities through guided tours.
Maintaining strong connections with industry is crucial for ensuring valuable pathways for our students. These partnerships help us align our training and curriculum with industry standards and provide practical, real-world experiences that prepare students for future their careers.
Thank you to all who attended and contributed to the success of this event. Your support is vital to our continued collaboration and the advancement of our students' futures.
What a fantastic day we had at the SAPSASA Athletics Day Carnival! Our students showed great sportsmanship and competed with a huge amount of spirit, helping us finish 5th overall. Congratulations to everyone who took part! A special mention goes to Marlee and Leo for making it into the Onkaparinga South Track & Field Team. Later this year, they will be competing in the State Championships.
Students at Cardijn College had an exciting opportunity to explore the world of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) under the guidance of Dr Pranay Sharma, Mr Rob Dvorak, and Ms Anne-Marie Taylor. As part of a hands-on project, the students were challenged to design and construct catapults using simple materials like dowels and rubber bands, which required them to tap into their collective creativity, teamwork, and innovative spirit.
The students approached the project with great enthusiasm and determination. They carefully researched catapult mechanics and experimented with designs to overcome challenges and refine their engineering skills. Ultimately, they created catapults capable of hitting targets between 5 and 25 meters away with impressive accuracy.
This project helped the students deepen their understanding of science, mathematics, and engineering concepts and fostered critical thinking and innovation. Through the iterative design, build, test, and refine process, they gained valuable insights into the interconnectedness of STEM disciplines and the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in solving complex challenges.

During school holidays, a group of Year 9 and 10 Galilee and Marian students participated in the VET Life Skills & Career Program. The day was divided into two sessions. In the morning, Mr Parkes led a session focusing on automotive where students got hands-on experience with practical activities such as changing a tyre and cleaning a car. The main goal of this session was to teach students essential vehicle life skills and explore the intricacies of general car maintenance.
Born to Build
During the afternoon session, Amanda Hewer from Born to Build led the students in learning valuable carpentry life skills. The workshop covered how to build a shelf and a coffee table, as well as an introduction to basic tools such as the drill, stud finder, leveller, screwdriver, measuring tape, and spanner.were taught valuable carpentry life skills.
The program was designed with the aim of providing students with practical information about various employment opportunities that they can explore and to help them understand the significant role that vocational education and training (VET) can play in their career advancement.
By attending the sessions, students gained useful insights that will enable them to make informed decisions about their future career paths and set them on the right track towards achieving their goals.
Catholic School Parents South Australia presents their second Parent Engagement Event for 2024. The event is on Tuesday 14 May, from 6.30pm - 8pm and will be presented by Paul Dillon from Drug and Alcohol Research Training Australia (DARTA). Last Term, the Year 7 students engaged in a fascinating dry ice practical science lesson! Together, they deepened their understanding of the different states of matter and how substances can exist in various forms.
During the school holidays, Ollie, a Year 2 student from Galilee, won first place in the MSA (Motorcycling South Australia) State Championships. This is an outstanding achievement!
We are thrilled to announce that two of our talented students, Edward (Year 11 Romero) and Eliza (Year 9 Kolbe), were part of Adelaide Youth Theatre's production of ‘The Little Mermaid’ Jr.
Although they were part of the ensemble for most of the shows, they had lead roles during the Saturday noon show! We're incredibly proud of their hard work and dedication. Congratulations, Edward and Eliza!
Deputy Head of Marian Campus
During the term break, interviews were conducted to arrange the appointment of Ms Tash Trenorden as the substantive Deputy Head of Marian Campus, commencing this term. Ms Trenorden’s previous position was Deputy Head of Marcellin Campus, and she previously acted in the role during the last term and for a period last year. We congratulate Tash and will finalise plans to replace her substantive position at Marcellin. Meanwhile, Mr Liam Brooks will continue as the acting Deputy Head of Marcellin.
ANZAC Commemorations
To commemorate is to remember together! Our ANZAC Ceremonies are not a celebration but a commemoration in honour of the ANZACS and all Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel who have sacrificed their lives for their nation and values, and those who have served and are serving in the ADF.
Cardijn was represented at Dawn Services across the Southern Vales, including Aldinga, Christies Beach and Port Noarlunga, Hallett Cove, and our Cadet Unit was present at the significant Morphett Vale Vigil. Plans are already underway to be formally represented at McLaren Vale next year. Significant services were also conducted at school. The Marian Service was deeply respectful and so aptly led by Captain Emily McCarthy (AAC) Officer Commanding 430 ACU – Cardijn College and our Cadets. Special guest, Retired Royal Marine Commando David McCarthy, recited the ode, and his presence added dignity to the gathering.
A point of reflection shared with the students is consider the ‘freedoms’ we now enjoy thanks to the ANZAC tradition and sacrifices – freedom of association, freedom of speech and critical thinking, and freedom to travel amongst many others! For many young Australian adults, working hard and saving for travels across the world is a rite of passage. We are privileged to do this! Visiting significant ANZAC sites such as Gallipoli, Western France, and Belgium, Kokoda in Papua New Guinea, Long Tan in Vietnam or other such places reinforces the sacrifice, courage, tenacity, mateship, and ingenuity of our ANZACs across the generations. To them, we are truly grateful.
