Cardijn Connect - a source of news and information for the Cardijn community. The blog will be published every Thursday during the school term with past editions always accessible from the menu.
Earlier this week Galilee celebrated the Feast of St Marcellin Champagnat in our Middle School. We started the day with a mass celebrated by Fr Josy. The students showed impeccable reverence and respect and it was great to hear them singing the Sub Tuum proudly to finish. The Sub Tuum is a song that has been sung by Marists around the world for centuries!
We then gathered in the library for a team quiz about St Marcellin, Marist Spirituality, and Marist schools. The students brought canned food items to donate to the St Vincent de Paul Society and then enjoyed a shared morning tea in the hall with their friends.
Well done to all students who represented Cardijn at the annual Cardijn-Tenison exchange, displaying honourable sportsmanship and resilience throughout the event.
Despite facing formidable challenges against some tough competition, Cardijn won one out of the eleven games against Tenison. In a highly energetic and close match, our Cardijn Boys Futsal team emerged victorious with a score of 7-6.
A heartfelt thank you to Tenison Woods College for graciously hosting the exchange, and we eagerly anticipate your visit next year.
For a detailed breakdown of each game score, head over to the Cardijn College Facebook page!
Congratulations to the following students who were honoured at the 2024 Cardijn-Tension Exchange:
Last week, Marcellin students participated in various sessions run by Tomorrow Man/Woman.
Year 11 male students – Module 1: "Breaking the Man Code"
Students explored the effects of rigid masculine stereotypes and expectations. The sessions provided practical tools and skills to help students build stronger connections and support each other.
All female students (across all year levels) – Module 1: "Her Code"
Female students engaged in Module 1, "Her Code," to address limiting gender expectations and peer pressure. This module equipped students with skills to navigate societal norms and develop a stronger sense of self.
All sessions have been valuable in promoting gender awareness and personal growth among our students.
Cardijn College students are demonstrating their commitment to mental health and suicide prevention by participating in The Push-Up Challenge. This national initiative aims to raise awareness and funds for critical crisis support and suicide prevention services. Participants will complete 3,249 push-ups over 24 days in June, symbolising the 3,249 lives lost to suicide in 2022.
Adding to the excitement, Channel 7 visited our college on Monday to cover the event and provide a live weather report. Their coverage highlighted the dedication and enthusiasm of our students as they push to make a difference.
Let's cheer on our students as they push to save lives. You can show your support by visiting www.thepushupchallenge.com.au/fundraisers/CardijnCollege.
During Week 4, Galilee's Year 6 students enjoyed an exciting school camp at the Woodhouse Adventure Park in Piccadilly.
Below are a few reflections from our students:
"Two weeks ago we went on a camp to Woodhouse. When we arrived after a singing-filled bus ride we were separated into groups and got started on activities straight away. The cold, bustling atmosphere gave us a taste of what the camp would be like.
Some of our highlights include getting wet on Challenge Hill, going to the labyrinth at night, playing Spotlight, and doing laser tag. On the second night, we spent time as a cohort and made a huge conga line.
We had the best time on camp and made some really fun memories."
Year 12 student Anthony and Year 11 student Harrison have recently completed their work experience, gaining valuable skills and leaving positive impressions at their respective placements.
Anthony at Auto Boss:
Anthony completed his work experience at Auto Boss, where he thoroughly enjoyed his time and gained significant insights into the industry.
Harrison at Lucas Total Contract Solutions:
Harrison undertook his work experience at Lucas Total Contract Solutions. He is also working towards a Certificate II in Automotive Vocational Preparation.
Galilee's Year 2 students recently visited the South Australian Museum, which boasts five floors of endless wonders to explore. They discovered a wide range of exhibits, from the first signs of early complex life to a comprehensive collection of Australian Aboriginal cultural material.
Our students learned about fossils, Australia's biodiversity, and cultural artifacts, gaining valuable educational insights from the experience.
Throughout Week 5, Marian Campus hosted a series of Year 7 Reflection Days at Port Noarlunga Surf Life Saving Club (Mon – Tues) and South Adelaide Football Club (Wed – Fri). To enhance the experience for our students, the Year 7s were divided into smaller groups, allowing us to connect with all students and delve deeper into our chosen theme; SEEing vs. Looking.
We unpacked this theme in three main sessions: Our Faith, Our Community, and Ourselves. To explore what it means to be a student at Cardijn College - a Catholic school grounded in the Marist tradition animated by a dual charism. Our schedule included reflective prayers, engaging discussions, and hands-on activities (e.g. Lego building, crafty stained-glass windows etc.).
Ultimately, we wanted our students to leave this day SEEing our community as more than just a building, helping our students to understand that they absolutely belong and are known and loved here at Cardijn College.
Thank you to all Year 7 students for making this a wonderful experience.
Last week, Galilee welcomed the incredible Helene from GooRoo Animation who joined our Year 3 and 4 students for a creative workshop! They explored the world of stop-motion technology and created their very own Lego movies.
The students had a lot of fun and the final movies turned out great. The highlight for our students was watching their creations be uploaded to YouTube, allowing them to share their work with family and friends.
According to 2023 data (Jobs and Skills Australia), approximately 91% of total employment growth was in occupations that typically require post- school qualifications. This highlights the importance of both the higher education and Vocational Education and Training (VET) systems to growing a high-skilled Australian workforce.
The 2024 Pathways Expo will provide access to a range of training providers, including universities and VET providers, where students and families can access key information about potential options. Starting with the end in mind can be helpful when making key decisions regarding future pathways!
Join us for the Year 9-12 Pathways Expo in the Marian Gym on Wednesday 31 July from 2.45 to 5.30pm.
It has been another busy (and excellent!) week across the Cardijn community!
This past week, we celebrated the Feast of St Marcellin Champagnat. St Marcellin is one of our College Patrons and was the founder of the Marist Brothers, a religious congregation of brothers in the Catholic Church devoted to Mary, and dedicated to education. His Feast Day is June 6!
St. Marcellin and the Marist Brothers were passionate about improving the lives of disadvantaged children and those with limited opportunities. Today, we continue to live the legacy of St Marcellin and the Brothers and provide extensive opportunities to students in our Cardijn Community. This week we have celebrated World Environment Day at Galilee, the St Marcellin Feast Day activities at Marcellin and students from Marian have participated in the Tenison Exchange, a sports exchange between Cardijn College and Tenison Woods College (Mt Gambier) which has been running for over 30 years!
It is through these opportunities that students experience a true ‘holistic’ education. This holistic education aspires to educate the young person as a whole so that Cardijn graduates are well-rounded and ready to make a positive impact in their community and to society more broadly.
In the words of St Marcellin, “To educate a child, first you must love them, and love them all equally!”
