Congratulations to Year 11 student Azi on being awarded the Hadley's 2023 Student Art Prize proudly presented by the University of Tasmania.
Judges described Azi's artwork Crosswind as 'A beautifully executed painting that expresses special family memories of journeys at sea.'
This award is for an outstanding artwork by a senior secondary student working with a landscape theme in their visual art practice. Judged by art education specialists at the University of Tasmania and the 2023 Hadley’s Art Prize Judges.
This week we welcomed 13 new Reception students to our Galilee community as they commenced their schooling journey in our mid-year intake. We hope they've had an exciting week and have enjoyed making new friends.
👟 Both new and experienced netballers got involved in last term's SACPSSA Netball Carnival.
Students from our ten teams that entered, ranging from Years 3 to 6, had a fantastic time mixing with over 50 schools that participated in the carnival.
♟ Recently a team of Marian Campus students competed in the Southern Schools Chess Tournament, coming away with bronze medals for their efforts! They all played so well, there was only one point separating them from second place!
⏱ Helena was awarded the trophy for best female player and Max was named Cardijn's top player. Congratulations also to Aehron, Caleb, Liam and James - you all did Cardijn proud!
🏆 The team heads into the next tournament hoping to secure a place at the state finals and we wish them all the very best!

Year 7 Global Perspectives classes Chavoin and Kolbe, participated in the 2023 Education Perfect Sustainable Oceans Competition.
This event coincided with an assessment where students each design a liveable city, where sustainability was a key factor. Several students included knowledge gained from the Education Perfect activities in their assignment.
Despite only having a relatively small number of students involved, the classes finished with some fantastic results:
- Year 7 Chavoin finished as the top class in Australia and Year 7 Kolbe finished 14th in Australia.
- Cardijn placed 5th in Australia in the school category competing against schools with over 2000 students involved compared to Cardijn's 56 participants
- Cardijn finished as the top school in South Australia
- 32 Cardijn students finished in the top 1000 students in Australia
- Oliver from Year 7 Kolbe won an individual prize of a Manta-Ray-Adoption Pack and a $100 gift card
👣 It takes the support of an entire community to make sure everybody has a safe place to sleep. This Friday a group of Marcellin students will be walking 46km from McLaren Vale Primary School to the Adelaide CBD to raise awareness and much-needed funds for Hutt St Centre to support those experiencing homelessness.

This week we paused to reflect on the life and mission of our College patron Cardinal Joseph Cardijn. Students participated in a liturgy where we celebrated his life and were reminded of his deep commitment to the Young Christian Workers (YCW) and overcoming the social injustices and the resulting poverty and exploitation which so many young workers were experiencing.
Over the holiday break, a team of six teachers from Marist Schools around Australia, including Caitlin Batty from Cardijn College Marian Campus, embarked on an immersion to Timor-Leste to work alongside the staff at the Catholic Institute for the Formation of Teachers in Baucau. Staff provided the staff at the Teacher College with interactive English lessons, as well as engaging in various community-building activities and cultural exchanges with local educators and students.
🧁 Year 11 Food and Hospitality classes were challenged with exploring contemporary flavours and presentation methods in cupcake design. In this wild and wacky practical, students developed three quality controlled examples of the same cupcake and then individually evaluated their performance. Some of their crazy cupcake ideas included:
- Wasabi, cream cheese and lime
- Roast dinner
- Matcha green tea latte
- Sweet and sour mango with chilli
- Peanut butter and jelly sandwich flavour
- Tonic water galaxy
- Lemon thyme, lemon myrtle and walnut
- Orange and pistachio
- Apple sour crunch
Last term during NAIDOC Week, Galilee invited Cultural Artist in Residence for Catholic Education Martin Pascoe to talk with students about his life and the influence the Elders in his life have had on him.
Martin shared that he was part of the Stolen Generation and was taken from Alice Springs and adopted by a Catholic family in Port Noarlunga. He was not a citizen of Australia as he was born before 1967.
Martin spoke about his upbringing in the local area of Port Noarlunga and Christies Beach and shared with the students stories about visiting local beaches, playing footy and how he began singing in locations in the south. It was great to hear the students connect with Martin and we thank him for visiting Galilee.
Questions from students:
How many other First Nations students went to school with you?
M: I was the only Indigenous kid.
What local footy team did you play for?
M: I played for Port Noarlunga.
What sort of songs did you sing?
M: Mainly cover songs.
We caught up with some of our Year 10 students who shared the following reflections on their Work Experience adventures during the last week of Term 2.
'I had the pleasure of completing work experience at the South Australian Health & Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI), otherwise known as the Cheese Grater. I explored various aspects of medical research such as neurobiology, mass spectrometry, precision cancer medicine and Aboriginal Health Equity. I highly encourage students interested in medical research to apply for work experience at SAHMRI, it will provide you with an understanding of medical research and the multiple forms it can take.' - Noah
'I completed my Year 10 work experience at Glenthorne National and surrounding parks. I participated in a variety of tasks including:
- Weeding, staking and guarding native plants
- Marine mammal stranding training
- Cetacean tissue sampling for a university study
- Animal and plant identification techniques
I enjoyed every moment and came home super tired after each day. It was an incredible experience and has given me plenty to think about for my future.' - Mia
'As a graduate of a Certificate 1 Hospitality I saw work experience as a chance to put my knowledge to good use and learn more about the inner workings of the industry. I ended up at the Marion Hotel where I was able to do a range of activities that helped the hotel run. At the end of my last shift, I was asked to come back for a part-time job!' - Melodie
'For work experience, I went to Fulton Hogan to explore the career path of engineering. I visited the wastewater treatment plant to look at the pump stations and machinery that needed replacing. We travelled underground to look at the pipe works for Adelaide which was an amazing experience. I had great support while I was there which has inspired me to further investigate the many opportunities in engineering.' - Oliver
'Work experience was the best experience of my life! I am grateful for the opportunities I had at Channel 7. I watched how a general reporter would make a news package and was also the Channel 7 representative at a conference. The team provided me with prompt questions to ask the Port Adelaide AFLW Coach, Lauren Arnell. I had the opportunity to sit in on a press conference with Charlie Dixon and met Ken Hinkley. I loved every minute of this experience and it has confirmed my passion for journalism.' - Astrid
'I completed work experience at Aldinga Community Kindergarten. Some activities I was involved with included helping children paint, build and read, along with assisting teachers set up and pack up the classroom. I developed skills that will be helpful in the workplace such as leadership, independence, and communication skills. The people at the kindergarten were supportive and gave me lots of positive feedback.' - Fletcher

Welcome to Term 3!
On Monday morning I stood with our recently appointed Head of Galilee, Ms Kerri Gould, in the car park welcoming our young people back to school. Among them were several new Reception students whose excitement and trepidation were visible in varying amounts. I was reminded of the Gospel story of Jesus’ reflection that we need to be like children and his beckoning that the children be brought to him. The sense of joy as these young students greeted each other, including a few hugs, was a delight to behold!
Let’s hope their journey at Galilee continues to enable our young people to not only embrace each other, but all that a Cardijn education has to offer!
Best wishes for the term ahead!
